Samurai tables

The samurai tables are part of an ongoing series which have design elements displaying a more Japanese architectural style. Two elements bear this out: the use of materials, and the structural design. Traditional timber-framed buildings use an interlocking structure of layers of increasingly lighter beams from ground to roof. The frame can look deceptively simple, although very complex. Materials are mainly wood, with stone used where its strength is necessary. I like the combination of natural materials. and the balance and harmony of design that can result from their careful use. Naturally shaped pieces can be inserted into a regularily shaped structure to provide a visual punctuation point and a reminder of the materials source. These tables all are relatively tall and long, but very narrow, with the finished size determined by the dimensions of the materials on hand that I felt would make a beautiful top, and the rest of the design following. I also felt that the tables looked as if they were intended to be used to display samurai swords.
