I do not build chairs very often. Usually they are part of a larger project such as a desk grouping or a rocking chair. I find building benches interesting because they appeal to my fascination with bridge and trestle-like structures. It is a challenge to construct a piece that will support a lot of weight, yet still appear to be light, or to have a structure that appears to contradict its functionality. I also have been using large slabs of wood, often with the natural shape of the edges left intact, as the focal point of the final design. The benches are part of an ongoing series.
